Our Adventure Holiday for Families is a great value active catered family holiday designed for families with children from 4 and up who love the outdoors and who want a very memorable and special family holiday. Yoga is offered for parents and children each morning before breakfast. Single parent families and single child families are very welcome. We visit canyons, lakes, waterfalls, and a National Park, trek, climb and white water rafting. This trip empowers children, encourages a great appreciation for nature and reinvigorates and inspires parents!
There are 4 fully organized days and a couple of days to be on your own with the family. On our first adventure day we hike to ‘The End of the World’ a hike in one of the natural wonders of France. We bathe under a waterfall and may spot Ibex as we have an early picnic. We then head back to Samoens for White Water Rafting. (Saskia, your host will take all the Under 7’s for an ice cream and to watch the others raft under the bridges).
The next day we walk from the chalet off the beaten track past a secret canyon to Lac Blue where we can swim in the Lake, trampoline, do a thrilling high ropes course in the trees and have a picnic. Another option is to do the Via Ferratta or Rock Climb. We will be in touch with all the group ahead of the trip to find out preferences.
The next day, is a family days when you do your own thing. We have plenty of suggestions! You may want to do something extreme like canyonning or parapenting, or just take it easy… lounge around the pool or by a lake in the village.
The next day we take our picnics and hike up to a mountain refuge and spend a memorable night in a cosy refuge at over 2000 metres. The air is crystal clear and the views and energy spectacular. The refuges are manned over the summer months, and so we are given dinner and breakfast. We sleep communally in the refuge on mattresses on the floor. Bedding is provided by we recommend bringing a spare t-shirt to put over the pillow. Bring ear plugs if you are sensitive to noise and a sleeping bag liner is recommend (these can be bought in the village for €15).
Our chalet, has been billed ‘The Best Eco-Lodge in the Alps‘ by the Guardian! With its beautifully designed open spaces and simple but luxury comforts, and our adventurous and earthy days in the outdoors, we really get the best of all worlds. Our chalet is a converted Barn and with high ceilings and glass walls and the light streams in through the living room. There is plenty of public space for everyone. The chalet is equipped with all mod cons although we encourage everyone to be present and live without too much distraction from the outside or cyber world.
We try to give each family lots of space and to give parents a room separate to children if they have more than one. We can let you know before you confirm your booking.
The chalet is called La Source, and was the home of the original La Source and it’s commune 7 years ago. It has a great feel and history. It is cosy and beautiful but it also enables you to breathe deeply. It is about 30 minutes walk above Samoens village in a stunning hamlet and it gives you a real sense of living in the mountains.
On this trip our friend Jess lovingly prepares all of our healthy meals. She is a professional chef and primary school teacher. She sources many of the ingredients from the local markets and farms and buys organic where possible. The food caters to a wide range of young pallets without disappointing the more distinguished gourmets!
Getting Here, Location and Local Transport:
We recommend families bring their own car as this offers you the most flexibility (budget around £400-450 for a return trip from Dover, UK to Samoens or £180 to hire a car from Geneva Airport). Let us know if this is not possible.
Saskia, the founder of La Source, hosts all of the Family Adventure holidays. This is her favourite trip! Saskia is a Yoga teacher and ex-Outward Bound Instructor and runs La Source for the love of sharing the Great Outdoors with other families. She is a mother of 2 and a documentary film maker who specialises in making films about progressive education and social issues affecting children. You can see some of her films here: www.schoolfilms.co.uk.
